Following the death of the Queen, various runway shows, and events were cancelled in London Fashion Week S/S 2023 due to national morning restrictions. As such, many designers and labels have chosen to reschedule their much anticipated défilé to Frieze week, which features a number of shows, events, and happenings (imagine it as a sort of fashion week mark five situation). The British Fashion Council’s big-ticket events, which are officially dubbed “Celebrating London Fashion Week,” include runway presentations by Alexander McQueen, Roksanda, and Raf Simons—the latter two of whom were originally scheduled to appear on the official London Fashion Week schedule last month.

Roksanda Ilincic

Roksanda Ilincic’s bold sculptural garments were displayed in Hyde Park’s Serpentine Gallery. In showing a collection during Frieze week, Roksanda Ilincic feels natural; she has had strong ties to the art world throughout her career, both as a collector and as a collaborator (last season, she collaborated with Eva Rothschild on the show’s geometrically coloured set).

An ode to art seemed to be the theme of this show, from inspiring the vivid outfits to the setting of the show. Roksanda displayed her collection inside Theaster Gates’ ‘Black Chapel’, an art installation, that was unveiled earlier this year. The Black Chapel is known as a place of contemplation and conviviality, a perfect setting for Roksanda’s own journey – choosing this location was a conscious decision by Ilincic because it invoked the unexpected yet meaningful emotions of death.

The collection featured voluminous, cascading gowns with 3D details that resembled abstract roses blooming, the silhouettes included exaggerated sleeves and flowing dresses that moved swiftly as the model strutted on the catwalk. It’s almost like each model served as a canvas with a variety of artistic techniques being incorporated into this collection. From swirling patterns that looked like diaphanous paintings on satin and silk to garments with black and yellow abstract lines that hinted at oriental influences.

There was an emphasis on showcasing Roksanda’s diversity with tailored pantsuits, swaggering full-length coats, and slim draped dresses among the show-stopping garments of this collection.

Alexander McQueen

As Sarah Burton unveiled her new collection for Alexander McQueen on the banks of the Thames, Greenwich, under a huge plastic bubble dome.

With images of Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch woven into her body-conscious and sleek tailored collection, Burton paid homage to the late designer she worked with for years. McQueen apparently enjoyed Bosch’s restlessly imaginative works, which often depicted religious scenes and flourishing natural worlds teeming with human violence.

This is not the first time that the artist has served as a muse for the house of Alexander McQueen. In McQueen’s ‘Angels & Demons’ collection for Autumn-Winter 2010-11, paintings from the late 15th and early 16th centuries were woven into the designs- the collection was the final one designed by McQueen himself.

Burton, however, took a different approach this time. Hers was a vibrant, collaged print used for cut-out catsuits, a bodysuit with a half skirt attached, and a sculptural, strapless gown. The way that she approached the silhouettes was also different from previously seen collections, she says “it’s always about a woman dressing for a woman. It’s not a male gaze.”

It was titled ‘First Sight’, and it was centred on the concept of ‘searching for humanity’. Burton recalls the collection to be “a symbol of that humanity, a register of emotion, an expression– the human eye”. The motif of the human eye recurred throughout the collection, whether it was embroidered in shimmering sequins or crystals across a catsuit.

The collection was laden with seductive outfits. The gowns featured cut-outs that revealed whole legs, jackets with backless or slashed inlets that revealed pelvic muscles, and ultra-low-rise trousers played off of McQueen’s original ‘bumster’ designs (the extremely low-rise trousers, first shown for SS94).

Burton also aimed to empower wearers with clothes that were stripped back, dissected and focused on cut, drape, and silhouette, bringing together sliced-away tailoring and low-waist trousers – the show was reaping with influences from Lee McQueen’s previous shows and also made homage to the designers structured denim two-sets and armour-like leather bustiers.

Adding a final touch to the show was an evocation of Hieronymus Bosch’s works.

Raf Simons

The Raf Simons fashion/rave party experience finally arrived in London.

The designer presented both his Spring/Summer 2023 collection at London’s Printworks nightclub and continued the night with a built-in afterparty during Frieze, the art fair Simons is actually a patron of.

For SS23, Raf Simons presented an edgy and sensual collection fit for a night at Printworks. “I think it’s actually the barest, most minimal collection I’ve ever done,” the designer said in an ES interview.

The collection may have been minimal, but the atmosphere was quite the opposite. The nightclub, an old newspaper printing factory that had been transformed into a bar, had almost 1,000 people crammed inside.

There were rows of guests seated on the elevated stage, close enough to see every detail of Simons’ fabrics. This collection brought back memories of McQueen’s FW97 collection “It’s a Jungle Out There,” which saw people sit or stand on the floor of a warehouse, a ‘ravey’ and nostalgic experience.

The collection itself was one of Simons’ most diverse to date. Under the ambient lighting of a techno nightclub, the SS23 collection mixed rave influences with ’80s punk references and subverted tailoring.

Hot pants and polka dot prints adorned the arms and legs of the co-ed collection, along with neon hues and skin-tight leggings. Additionally, some Berghain leather influences were evident in the runway boots, while the belted playsuits and technical details accentuated the submissive sense of design that he learned from Prada.

In a preppy trend, we saw tiny knitted tops transform into romper suits. Bringing back the underground elements were fishnets (used in over-the-shoulder bags and skimpy tops) and leather oversized biker jackets that reflected punk and glam rock styles.

The collection continued to surprise the audience, as shorts were pleated on the side to reveal slits filled with contrasting fabrics. A sense of innocence was once again provided by tanks made from thin, raw-edged cotton, while now-signature details like the skeleton cuff or bold use of alpaca wool added more punk undertones.

Erdem

Classic fashion glamour walked the runway at Erdem’s show, with refined skirt suits, wonderfully minimalist and elegant overcoats, and dramatic show-stopping dresses with intricate lace detailing aplenty. Despite appearing dark and gothic on the surface, the show drew inspiration from a number of women deeply engrained into Berlin’s progressive spirit of the 1930s. These women were trailblazers in gender fluidity, living their lives as cross-dressers and opening lesbian bars in the midst of war.

The show helped to remind that even in the darkest of times it is ultimately love and expression of oneself that helps to power through and continue living life to the fullest, and this collection of expertly crafted garments pushed the notion even farther.

Rejina Pyo

Taking inspiration from 1920s supper clubs, Rejina Pyo’s collection was a dazzlingly vintage spectacular also taking cues from other more modern eras such as the 1970s and, particularly, from many art deco pieces that were produced in and around that period. Shades of beige were perhaps the most present colours of the show, but in no way did they feel drab, with coats, blazers, dresses, skirts and scarfs awash in the colour feeling delightfully retro and perfectly encapsulating the era from which they were inspired.

Pastel shades of purple, green and yellow added a touch more colour to proceedings in a way which was subtle and meshed well with the abundance of brown and beige. Add in some orange tinted sunglasses and you have a collection that is the epitome of vintage, and that is no bad thing.

Roksanda

If there is one word to describe this season’s Roksanda show, dramatic seems to be the most apt. There was a minimalist start to proceedings with beige jumpsuits and traditional tailoring. The show soon kicked up a gear with an increasing parade of bombastic and bizarre looks that dazzled the audience.

Deep, luscious colours soon began layering on top of each other, before the garments themselves took a huge turn to the theatrical. Huge, billowing dresses in hypnotizing colours walked alongside blazers and skirts with extreme fringing that also looked like they had been plucked straight out of a painting, whilst eventually quite possibly the most dramatic athleisure wear ever created closed out proceedings, with bold geometric prints and colours sitting alongside more traditional athleisure staples like stripes and monochrome colours and the silhouettes of the garments themselves being dramatically oversized with billowing sleeves and enormous coats. This was a true fashion journey.

If a Tim Burton movie were ever to jump off of the big screen and on to the catwalk THIS is what it would look like. A jaw-droppingly gothic spectacle which leaned hard into the theatrics and dramatics, whilst also taking inspiration cues from the 1980s pop punk culture of the UK, with bands such as New Romantics and Blitz Kids absolutely being present in spirit in this collection.

All of the hallmarks of classic punk were present: leather jackets blazoned with prints, ridiculously oversized blazers with colour blocking and paneling, and a vivid palette of reds and blacks often combined with vertical stripes to really finish the aesthetic off to a tee. The more gothic elements were present in the forms of swaying lace frocks, extravagant floral prints atop bomber jackets and dresses, and furry boots that were, perhaps, more fur than boot. Striking and beautiful performances were also displayed throughout the show making this theatrical bonanza one of the most spectacular and memorable shows of the season so far.

Edeline Lee

Minimalism is at the heart of Edeline Lee’s latest collection. Whilst a theatrical extravaganza is always a joy to behold, so is having a stripped back collection which really emphasises the meticulous care and attention to detail which goes into producing clothes. Minimalist in colour, with slick monochromes and warming browns, and minimalist in nature, with traditional tailoring of jackets, dresses, skirts and coats on display, this delightfully sophisticated collection strips fashion back to its core in a way which doesn’t feel stale, but instead warming and nurturing.

Bold and statement worthy, the volume trend has marked its territory for the upcoming season. Amongst the numerous trends spotted in the Autumn/Winter 2020 collections, the volumized look has most definitely caught our attention. Who can blame us when this trend screams the classic go big or go home!

Voluminous sleeves

It was only a matter of time before voluminous sleeves returned to the forefront, claiming its place yet again as a stylish go-to. In the Autumn/Winter 2020 show, voluminous sleeves made a strong appearance amongst many of the collections. Roksanda’s orange maxi with oversized ruffle sleeves is one of our favourites along with Richard Quinn’s bulbous sleeved dresses which rock that nostalgic 80’s feel. If you dare for more extravagance, Viktor and Rolfe display a sculptural pink dress that is sure to turn some heads. A bulging sleeve is asymmetrically paired with one of contrasting size, offering a playful approach to volume.

Bubble up

As the colder months approach, this trend offers a practical yet stylish option for the upcoming season. The catwalk featured an array of enveloping garments with outerwear and dresses offering a bubble-like protective layer. This was a strong look in J.W. Anderson’s collection consisting of spherical silhouettes inclusively wrapping around the body. At Halpern, a dress of explosive colour engulfs the wearer, leaving only the front of the legs visible. Marine Serre took the inclusive look even further with black puffy outwear that conceals around the head; practicality at its best.

Exaggerate the Hip

The Autumn/Winter shows saw an extreme exaggeration of the hips; Area and Moschino being two of the houses that utilize the look. To say that Area’s jackets and dresses accentuate from the waist would be an understatement. Area has pushed hip volume to the extreme with a bulging heart shape that protrudes from a nipped waist. Moschino similarly presents an array of long-sleeved dresses that encompass an umbrella effect around the hip. Paired with knee-high boots, we love how Moschino has merged the traditional with a modern 2020 twist.

Ruffled Volume and Tulle

When we think of tulle it is almost impossible for the words ‘puffy’ ‘big’ and ‘Molly Goddard’ not to spring to mind. We can always rely on Goddard to present some extravagant tulle pieces on the catwalk and for Autumn/Winter 2020 they are voluminous and bold yet still retain that delicate quality. A red dress consisting of ruffled tulle expands outwards and is layered over a jumper for a more casual look. We love how Goddard has paired a sense of volume and extravagance with a staple jumper. At Louis Vuitton, ruffles can also be seen amongst skirts and dresses, the sheerness of the fabric lending itself to layering. Ruffled skirts and dresses can be paired with a sheer trouser as seen in Louis Vuitton or with a checked trouser from Molly Goddard, creating a subtle layered look that is versatile for every season. Over the last three days, we have watched the fashion industry come together, adapt and

transform London Fashion Week Men’s into a digital event in response to the Coronavirus

outbreak.

It may not have been the same experience of running in between shows, meetings and

events, but we were not left disappointed. We’ve watched discussions, podcasts, virtual

exhibitions and virtual catwalks all from the industry’s leading fashion voices.

It’s been a hectic three days, so if you missed anything from the weekend festivities, we’ve

rounded up our top moments from LFW.

Friday 12th June

Liam Hodges presents Miss Jason & Hasani B2B in support of LGBTQIA + POC

After a full day of discussions, catwalks and exhibitions, the first day of LFW came to an

exciting end with a DJ set from Miss Jason & Hasani B2B to raise awareness for LGBTQIA+

POC in the UK. You can donate here.

Not only was the final event raising awareness for an incredible organisation but got us

feeling for the weekend and very excited for the rest of Fashion Week to continue.

Saturday 13th June

KA WA KEY

KA WA KEY showcased a mixture of SS21 and archived pieces for the second day of LFW.

The collection was showcased using only a green screen, a London home and a very creative

mind, all produced during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The video, named “There’s no place like home”, was inspired by nursery rhymes and fairytale characters. We couldn’t tell if it was real life, or we were hallucinating.

XANDER ZHOU AW20

Chinese fashion designer, Xander Zhou (and the first-ever menswear Chinese designer to be

included in LFW Men’s) walked us through his latest AW20 collection in a very futuristic,

digitally voice-over ‘critical update’ video.

Each showcase was very unique from the next, transitioning from monochrome buttoned

shirts to colourful pixel puffa jackets. He really took ‘fashion-forward’ to a whole new level

with this collection.

XU ZHI PRELUDE

Fashion designer Zu Zhi debuted his latest AW20 collection in a virtual catwalk film. The designer really pushed the boundaries of a typical catwalk, in true corona style, with seamless transitions between an underground tube station to a luxury city apartment, which really captured the inspo behind his latest collection. Elegant fashion that can be worn from day to night. Tassels, faux fur patching and distressed fabrics took centre stage to this latest collection, all the while keeping his signature tailored look.

NABIL NAYAL/ Chapter X: The Archives in Blue

In a 4-minute short film, Syrian-born British fashion designer Nabil Nayal, presents his tenth

collection and takes a look back at his ‘hero pieces.’ To sum up this latest collection, there is only one word to use. Blue. “During the Reformation, blue was highly regarded as a moral shade, separate from the true colours of red, green yellow and purple, which were deemed extravagant and grotesque. Blue allows me to see the archives in a new light, without detracting from the essence of the garments,” says Nayal.

15 Year of TONI&GUY hair on London Fashion Week

One of our favourite moments from the weekend was a trip back to look at all the best TONI

and GUY hairstyles on the LFW catwalk over the last 15 years. We got a look behind the scenes at how hairstyling has evolved over the last decade and a half, through showcasing many designers including the likes of Giles, Jean-Pierre Braganza, Betty Jackson and Paul Costelloe.

OSMAN YOUSEFZADA’s film ‘Her Dreams are Bigger’

Osman Yousefzada shared a very enlightening short film to highlight the issues of fast

fashion and to give a voice to fashion factory workers in Bangladesh.In the film, workers are asked to give their impression on the kind of women who buy the clothes they make which really highlights the inequality the fast-fashion chain. Some of the impressions included; “They look beautiful,” “they eat different kinds of food,” “they’re not black like me,” “their lips are like dolls.” It’s an eye-opening document that shows the lives of those behind the clothes. It’s a story everyone should see.

Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY Presents SOLASTA.

To round down Saturday we listened into a live-streamed fundraising event for UK Black

Pride. We don’t want to give too much away, but to celebrate his AW2020 collection, Charles Jeffery took us to the basement where his fashion house LOVERBOY was founded to hear from musicians, dancers, spoken word artists and designers. All to raise cash for Black Pride. Needless to say, we were left feeling very inspired. Donate to UK Black Pride

RIXO ‘Flora’ Resort 2021 Collection

For Rixo’s digital LFW presentation, they released a short video teasing us with their resort

2021 Flora collection. The look book was shot in Rixo’s co-founder Henrietta’s family home

garden surrounded by trees and flowers to show off the collection.The collection features a load of florals, ditsy prints, daisy embroidered knitwear, floaty summer dresses and watercolour roses. Really living up to its name. The collections not available to buy online yet, but check out the teaser video

Stephen Jones Millinery ‘Analogue Fairydust’

Stephen Jones Millinery treated us to a preview of his Spring-Summer 2021 collection,

named ‘Analogue Fairydust in collaboration with Noonoouri. The short clip gave us an insight into what’s to come from the upcoming collection, featuring everything from a fantasia star covered mask, to a dark grey wave crown to a floating silver embellished top hat. All modelled on a VR doll. We couldn’t tell what was real, and what wasn’t!

LFW Designer Diary: Roksanda

It was short but very sweet. An inside look into the colourful, elegant world of Roksanda. In

a ‘Designer Diary’ she showcased her inspiration during the lockdown and the efforts put into

making her latest collection. In her AW2020 line, she experimented with everything from camo print, to burgundy leather to chunky knitwear. There’s no running theme which each look different to the next, but we are obsessed.

Natasha Zinko x DUOltd SS21 Collection

“A nostalgic celebration of Land of the Free that is a stark contrast to the painful and

harrowing imagery that has emerged from the US in recent weeks.” Her latest collection is described as ‘optimistic’ and ‘youthful’ as it’s filled with references of peace signs, hippie flares, heart prints, smiling faces and a lot of cowboys. The collection is to embody what the American Dream is supposed to embody, drawing attention to the recent violence and protests.

For the first time in history, the public got to walk the John Lewis & Partners catwalk to raise

money for The British Fashion Council. In true lockdown fashion. Hundreds took part in the showing off their own John Lewis summer looks, making it a ‘fashion moment to remember!’ We loved everything about it. What a way to end the weekend.

With another season of fashion weeks drawing to a close, and despite the somewhat sombre mood that swept the fashion capitals from New York to Paris, the Autumn/Winter 2020 catwalks offered plenty of food for thought on how to get dressed come next autumn, with a wealth of trends unfolding fresh off the runway.

Leather

Leather is a winter wardrobe mainstay season after season, but a plethora of AW20 collections explored new styles and silhouettes. Coach offered a lesson is layering leather, with colour-blocked leather culottes, midi-skirts and button-down shirts worn under pastel cardigans, oversized trench coats and shearling jackets. Hermès horse-jumping-inspired show featured supple leather ensembles in buttery shades, while Gabriela Hearst’s foray into leather came in the form of a caramel-coloured puff-sleeve leather dress.

Fringing

Fringing appeared in generous measures on the catwalks at all four fashion weeks but was particularly prevalent in Milan, where pleats were chopped up into fringe at Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo coated black dresses with golden trimmings, while Boss and Jil Sander sent iterations of silk-fringed evening dresses down their respective runways. At Bottega Veneta, Daniel Lee – arguably the most celebrated designer in the industry today – unveiled myriad shredded designs, with dresses finished with acidic lime green tassels and an updated take on the brand’s coveted woven pouch bag featuring exaggerated fringe.

Capes

The outerwear option du jour, billowing capes were ubiquitous across the four cities, with generously-cut shapes bringing a sense of sartorial drama to the catwalks. Michael Kors championed blanket dressing with an abundance of cashgora cape coats served up in cosy fabrics and warming winter colour palettes, while at JW Anderson knitted capes and layers of tinsel-trimming belled out from the shoulders of dresses.

Checks

The collective infatuation among designers for checks was unfading this season, manifesting itself in abundant iterations of tartan, gingham and heritage checks. In New York, Claudia Li’s translucent vinyl pleated-midi and blazer combination came in punchy pink gingham, while Monse dipped into mismatched tartan with skirts secured by safety pins and worn with punkish lace-up boots. Across the Atlantic at London Fashion Week, Burberry returned to its roots with remixed heritage checks in innovative cuts, and Shrimps gave the print a regal touch in a potent orange, pink and green colourway.

Chocolate Brown

Brown is the new black – at least according to the AW20 runways. Chocolatey shades are solidifying their place in the sartorial stratosphere, firmly entrenching their place in the palette of neutrals that have dominated the catwalks and streets for the past few seasons. Chocolate-coloured outerwear seems to be emerging as an autumn/winter wardrobe essential, tackled with aplomb at Victoria Beckham and Emilia Wickstead, while A.W.A.K.E Mode offered a quilted velvet version with an exaggerated collar. At Jil Sander, a bell-sleeved leather shirt with matching pants was rendered head-to-toe in the shade, while Christopher Kane swathed a pleated bra-dress from the chest down in the sweet hue.

Equestrian Trappings

An affluent array of designers paid homage to equestrian style and turning out bourgeois tailoring this season, with Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski’s show for Hermès plunging into the brand’s heritage for a show centred entirely around the sport. Elsewhere, Hedi Slimane continued his three-season-running ode to the ‘70s bourgeois French girl at Celine, in the form of equestrian-style knee-high boots, horse-bit belts and gold-chain accessories, this time injected with a bohemian edge, meanwhile Shrimps’ regal-inspired show was populated with tartan Victorian jackets worn with riding pants and silk foulards.

Gothic Glam

A certain darkness hung over the collections at Valentino – where floods of black replaced last season’s explosions of colour – and Anna Sui – whose horror film-inspired collection gave way to burnout velvet and vampire-esque leather – as if to reflect the sombre shadow over fashion week of the Coronavirus crisis and the ongoing conversation around fashion’s negative impact on the environment. Showgoers at Paco Rabanne witnessed a procession of decadent embellishment, ornate tapestry dresses and a play on dress as armour in the form of chain-mail dresses in a collection that explored medieval dress codes. At Rodarte, gothic glam met romanticism in eerily beautiful silhouettes that married dark energy with delicate details from puff sleeves and tiered ruffles to floral-print silks and embroidery.

Iridescence

The runways were equally awash iridescence and sparkling ensembles to lift the winter mood and see us through the party season. Rejina Pyo gave high-sheen glamour an office-attire twist, pairing a pearly puff-shouldered blouse with a sleek wool midi-skirt and knee-high boots. Others presented an inundation of red carpet-appropriate attire and party-ready bedazzled ball gowns – Julien Dossena reinterpreted Paco Rabanne’s signature chain-mail silhouette with a thread of fantastical glamour; Erdem injected a dose of 1920s glam into a silver dress decorated with tiered embroidery; and Halpern wrapped models in shimmering metallics with statement sleeves.

It is people like Roksanda Ilinčić that generate excitement for the future of the designer houses. An alumnus of the Faculty of Applied Arts, University of Arts in Belgrade, and a favourite among the royals (The Duchess of Cambridge swears by her) London-based fashion designer Roksanda has now lent her creative touch to the interiors of an iconic apartment. After dressing A-listers and some of the most famous women across the globe, the Serbian designer has given a beautiful take on The Penthouse, in the heart of London’s King’s Cross.

One of the many achievements of Roksanda apart from being awarded the ‘British Designer of the Year’ at Elle Style Awards in 2016 is being featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s exhibition ‘Ballgowns: British Glamour since 1950’. As expected, there’s an elegant amalgamation of her signature style to the three-bedroom duplex penthouse she’s effortlessly designed to perfection.

The Penthouse is part of a landmark residence, which sits within the “triplet” of Grade II-listed Victorian gasholder guide frames. Best known for her use of colour blocking and geometric patterns, it features Ilinčić’s unique combination of contemporary yet exclusively stylish art between all rooms. Ilinčić’s signature style and aesthetics come from her own inspiration when she was a previous resident of Kings Cross. “Iconic and beautiful Gasholders always captured her attention”, says the celebrated designer.

We can see Roksanda’s contemporary style transcend into this landmark project as well where she’s added murals and artwork by established female designers. From Paris-based artist Caroline Denervaud to stunning furniture creations by Lina Bo Bardi and Charlotte Perriand, you’ll see it all (not to forget textiles by Kvadrat and Lena Rewell). “Architecture, art, and design are disciplines which consistently inspire my own collections,” Roksanda told Forbes.

Two important elements of the apartment’s aesthetic are the spacious kitchen and the entrance hallway complete with a large open-plan living/dining room. Roksanda’s innate modernist colour palette has transformed this house whose balconies overlook King’s Cross and Coal Drops Yard.
