A few days ago, Givenchy launched its FW 2024 women’s campaign, unveiling a series of playful and provocative looks that push the boundaries of high fashion. Among the faces of this bold new launch is Neelam Kaur Gill, the British-Indian model who needs no introduction. Known for her striking features—sharp cheekbones, expressive eyes, and a presence that commands attention—Neelam stands as a beacon of representation in an industry often perceived as an exclusive club with rigid entry rules.

Neelam’s inclusion in this campaign is not just about aesthetics; it’s about the statement she brings with her. In a world where conformity often overshadows individuality, her unwavering commitment to her roots and her pride in her heritage make her role in this campaign as significant as it is groundbreaking.

From Coventry to Couture: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Neelam’s story is as inspiring as it is authentic. She didn’t grow up in the world of fashion and never saw herself as part of it. In Coventry, she was a self-proclaimed “normal working-class girl,” shy, awkward, and unsure if she fit the industry’s mould. Modelling was simply a way to save for university, but it quickly evolved into a career that would redefine her life.

At 18, Neelam took a leap of faith and stepped into the world of modelling—not with grand ambitions, but as a means to fund her education. What she found instead was a path that would redefine her life and, in turn, the fashion industry.

Staying True to Her Roots

When advised to drop “Kaur” from her name to appear more racially ambiguous, Neelam refused. “I’ll always remain true to myself,” she stated. Her commitment to her identity has become her trademark. Now, as the face of Givenchy, she carries a legacy, a culture, and a fierce commitment to staying true to who she is.

A Career Defined by Representation

Neelam’s journey in the fashion industry began with campaigns for brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, where she first gained recognition. But it was her debut on the Dior runway last year that marked a significant turning point in her career. Walking for Dior wasn’t just a personal achievement for Neelam; it was a cultural celebration. “Deeply grateful to have been a part of this moment in history, especially as a Punjabi girl,” she shared, acknowledging how significant it was to see her culture embraced by a fashion house she had long admired.

Givenchy, a brand known for its elegance and classic beauty, chose Neelam not just for her striking looks, but for the depth she brings to their campaigns. Her presence challenges traditional beauty standards and opens doors for other women who, like her, may have once felt they didn’t belong.

A Continuing Legacy in Fashion

Neelam Kaur Gill’s role in Givenchy’s FW 2024 campaign signifies a continuation of fashion’s evolving narrative—one where authenticity, diversity, and cultural pride take centre stage. Her journey from Coventry to the global stage is a testament to the power of staying true to oneself, and her influence in the fashion world is only just beginning.

The Fashion Awards is consistently ranked as one of the most seminal nights for fashion lovers – and last night’s ceremony lived up to expectations. Hosted in London’s Royal Albert Hall, the event brought together an extremely stylish and iconic guest-list including the likes of Julia Roberts, Giorgio Armani, Donatella Versace, Rihanna and Naomi Campbell (though that’s to name just a few).

Rihanna stole the show with her all-green ensemble – which, as expected, was all from her own clothing line, FENTY. Her halterneck ‘Light Matcha’ satin bustier dress was elegantly paired with matching gloves and a Gerogette sheer coat embellished with diamonds draping gently on her back. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that FENTY picked up an award for ‘Best Urban Luxe Brand’ last night presented to her by Tyler the Creator and Janet Jackson.

“Thank you for believing in me as a young black woman and my talent,” she said, accepting the award. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to prove what I love to do”.

Naomi Campbell was also a prize winner last night for ‘Fashion Icon Award’ and hence became the first woman of colour to ever receive the accolade. She thanked her mother primarily, stating, “whatever success I have is a testament to you”. The sheer embellished Alexander McQueen gown worn last night was just one of the many looks she has effortlessly pulled off over the course of her 3-decade-long career.

Adut Akech took the title of ‘Model of the Year’ and in her acceptance speech, the South Sudanese-Australian model stated “This award is bigger than me; it’s bigger than a title in the industry. It’s for every young girl or boy refugees around the world in a tough position who are unheard or unseen”. Her emerald green Valentino dress worn last night featuring a thigh-high split and statement bow looked like it was picked directly from the Fashion Houses’ latest Haute Couture collection showcased in Beijing this November which featured big bows and bare shoulders.

Other favourites from the night include Kaia Gerber in a monochrome Loewe ensemble. A black bralette paired with a lace white skirt, taken from the SS20 collection channelled a fresh Gen-Z aesthetic.

Host, Tracee Ellis Ross also wore Loewe, in particular a white handkerchief dress from Jonathan Anderson’s spring/summer 2020 collection. The layered white piece featured a geometric mismatch hemline paired with a chunky white necklace.
