If TikTok, Instagram and the viral Miu Miu slingbacks are to be believed, cherry red is the colour of the season. While red has always been part of the autumnal colour palette, recent years has seen it take a step back with ‘Christian Girl Fall’ colours (brown, mustard white, brick, burnt orange) taking a more prevalent position in the hierarchy. This subdued, deep red is the perfect accent to any outfit, bringing life to your darker warm clothes.

While it is easy to pendulum between the many variations of the black or navy turtle neck and the white woollies, buttercup cream is the perfect way to subtly introduce lighter colours back into the mix. While the shade is very reminiscent of white, the hint of yellow makes all the difference. The vanilla-esque colour comes from the same line of thought as the mustard beanie we all had in 2017 but, evokes a far more luxurious pastel palette to fit into your “silent luxury” outfit rotation.

Metallics are here to stay this season. Between the recent Rabanne X H&M collaboration and the abundance of it during the Autumn/Winter ’23 shows, metallics has been revived in the zeitgeist. Metallics can actually be far more versatile than they are given credit. A metallic version of the customary satin slip dress present in everyone’s closet, is a far more elevated piece of clothing in and of itself. A chunky metallic coat or leather jacket, chrome knee-high boots, a sequined mini skirt – are all pieces fit to enhance your fall and festive wardrobe.

We cannot talk about the takeover of corp-core without pinstripes. Pinstripes have been a staple of the suit closet since time in memorial and they have never been more in style. Corporate core calls to two very clear-cut sensibilities within its aesthetic—the Y2k Devil Wears Prada corporate chic and the 80’s Armani, broad shouldered power-suited woman. Both are great ways to layer the pinstripe blazer with a matching trouser, skirt or even vest. The pinstripe’s vertical lines allow for an elongated and clean look, a stark contrast to the many puffer jackets that will pass by you this fall.

Checks are the greatest way to incorporate multiple colours into your fall wardrobe. From Gingham, Madras, Plaid to Tartan, Checkerboard and Argyle, checks are an extremely fun way to play around with not only colour but also patterns. While checks have been a pretty consistent trend for most winter wardrobes, 2023 sees checks getting bigger, broader and bolder.

Paloma Elesser

Following on from her Vogue cover, Paloma put together this monochrome look for the Sulwhasoo beauty event at the MET museum. Giving major tropical island energy, she layers a crisscross crochet tank over a mesh bra and pairs it with a white nylon bubble skirt and chunky bubble slip-on wedges— all from Proenza Schouler. The all-white look makes her tan pop, and her slick-back hair and natural makeup give her that glowy holiday look. She accessorises with a metallic bar clutch, also from Proenza Schouler.

BIA

Bia wears head-to-toe Diesel for a brand event. Her glam makeup consists of
neutral colours to coordinate with the matching Diesel worn-look leather jacket and low-rise trousers. The camel-coloured jacket, with dark panelling, is half unzipped to create an hourglass figure and bring a feminine touch to the biker look. She carries a green and brown distressed baguette bag with bleach spots and a metallic Diesel logo. Adding to the metallic theme, she mixes chunky silver rings with dangling cross earrings. Finally, she wears denim Diesel court shoes with a silver logo to match her jewellery and holographic nails.

Kicki Yang Zhang

Kicki layers up for the cold Berlin weather in this Adidas x Gucci FW22 knitted co-ord, consisting of a long-sleeve turtleneck jumper, cableknit sweatpants, and a balaclava. She wears black leather gloves to complement the black Adidas logo and three stripes. She spices up the casual outfit with bold makeup: bright pink blush, red lips, and thick winged eyeliner that stands out against her bleached eyebrows and hair.

Jordyn Woods

Jordyn wears this elevated casual look on the streets of Brooklyn, layering a long leather lace-up coat over a black Loewe tank top. She wears a pair of acid wash trousers to tie together the black and white and dresses it up with a pair of pointed-toe ruched leather boots. Her accessories bring a touch of glamour to the outfit with a diamond watch, tennis bracelet, and diamond rings to match the diamonds on her Chanel bag’s strap and logo.

Rosalia

For a performance in Mexico as part of her tour, Rosalía wore this red gingham Acne Studios dress paired with leather boots and gloves. The high-low cape dress is dramatic and perfect to perform in, and the pattern reminds us of a summer picnic blanket. She incorporates an edgy biker aesthetic into the look with the black leather lace-up opera gloves and knee-high motor boots with knee pads, and finishes the look off with a classic red lip.

Sami Miro

Sami’s chic bathroom selfie shows off her glittery outfit in the best light. She matches this hot pink glittery bodycon dress from Cult Gaia with hot pink and diamonte wrap heels. Her silver diamanté cage bag, also from Cult Gaia, catches the light and adds even more sparkle to the look. Finally, she layers on top a brown, oversized cropped leather jacket from her own vintage label.

Raye

Wandering the streets of NYC, Raye mixes comfy and classy with this look. She wears a Dion Lee co-ord: grey corset tank top and high-low double-arched maxi skirt. For comfort, she wears a pair of Nike Air Force Ones with white gym socks. Her bag of choice is the Ugg x Telfar mini pink and shearling trim crossbody bag, and she wears minimal jewellery, opting for oversized statement hoop earrings.

Gabriette

Posing for Marc Jacob’s heaven, Gabriette embodies the 90s grunge aesthetic of the brand. She wears the new collection’s patchwork-style long sleeve crewneck over a faded, reworked denim midi skirt and adds a bohemian element with the western disc belt.

Aureta

Aureta literally looks as if she is trapped inside a MacBook screensaver. Despite being in the middle of the Saharan desert, Aureta doesn’t compromise style for practicality, going for an all-black outfit in the sun. She wears an oversized bedazzled denim jacket with gold stars, studs, and mirrored circles over a black satin crop top and black leggings. She sticks
to the gold theme with a gold chain choker, oversized futuristic gold and diamond earrings, and gold reflective sunglasses.

Lizzo

Lizzo embraces her colourful surroundings in the Bahamas with this bright, cut-out crossover bathing suit. She layers a salmon pink mesh cover up over it and styles it with large hoop earrings, rose-tinted Loewe sunglasses, and hippy bracelets. She goes for natural nails, embracing neutral brown and nude ombré acrylics.

An overwhelming divide between two camps swept the Autumn/Winter 19 runways earlier this year, with many of the collections that graced the catwalks falling firmly into one of two sartorial categories: minimalism and maximalism.

For the minimalists, Tory Burch and Céline unveiled a plethora of back-to-basic bourgeois essentials, Alexander Wang featured understated supple leather, while neutral hues dominated at Victoria Beckham and The Row. At the other end of the spectrum, volume, drama, rich colours and embellishment – in other words, a maximalist’s dream – reigned supreme, with no shortage of seasonal sparkle. With December fast approaching and party season on the horizon, look to the runways for the key ingredients to scoring the perfect festive party look – warning, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

High on glamour, the holiday season is as good an excuse as any to load up on sparkle. With the season’s mantra that ‘more is more’, nothing is too extra when it comes to the party pieces to get you noticed. Imitate the high-shine styles found on the AW19 catwalks, with options abound for glittering looks that’ll slide effortlessly into your party season wardrobe. Seek blinding seasonal sparkle at Michael Kors, where matching feather boas offered the perfect accoutrement to plunging purple halter-necks and royal azure cut-out glitter dresses. Make a festive statement in a black and silver sequin mini dress with a giant outlandish bow, as donned by Kaia Gerber on the Saint Laurent runway. Or, if you’re looking for something a little less OTT, pair a silk shirt with high-waisted sequin trousers that’ll work hard to uplift a winter soirée, as seen at Paco Rabanne, or an all-over glitter blouse with ombre flares and chunky silver heels as demonstrated by Halpern. A little black dress is a fail-safe number for the office Christmas do – add a layer of edge and swathe yourself in sequins with a glittering black blazer dress inspired by Saint Laurent.

Catch the light in disco metallics, which held sway at Altuzurra in the form of a golden pleated tier dress. At Gucci, shimmering leopard print midi skirts were paired with lace blouses and emerald green mermaid pleats took form in a balloon-sleeve blouse worn with opulent lace red tights. Speaking of which, tights are the accessory du jour. From fishnets to polka dots and diamantée embellishment, a pair of tights adds the perfect finishing touch to a luxurious party look.

Have a penchant for roaring 20s Gatsby glam? A jewel-encrusted mini dress serves as the perfect +1 to accompany you to an upcoming Christmas party – add diamond tassel earrings for an extra dose of glamour as seen as Paco Rabanne, or black studded accessories at Balmain for a flapper-meets-90s grunge look. Take inspiration from Michael Kors and go tonal with a copper fringe dress, matching heels and a (faux) fur coat for that extra layer of warmth – the perfect pick-me-up for dark winter nights. Black-tie occasion? Plunge into luxurious plumage inspired by Marc Jacobs’ decadent ball gowns. Feather trimmings were equally plentiful, with feather-lined shoes worn with sparkling hot pants and a fur shawl at Saint Laurent, and a feather-hemmed black blazer dress unveiled at Balmain. Alternatively, opt for an evening tuxedo as the go-to alternative to a dress – but not without a dose of opulence in the form of rich, jewel-toned puff sleeves as seen at Alexander McQueen.
