A true Aries, Lady Gaga is known for her high energy, passionate, and fiery songs that dominate the charts. Born This Way (2011), Gaga’s iconic second album, just screams Aries – just look at that rocker cover with Gaga as a motorbike! On this dance-pop album, Gaga dips her toes into metal, disco, house, rock, and opera to create an outrageously fun experimental piece that challenges what traditional pop is. It’s a feminist album that delights in freedom and equality. Gaga doesn’t care what the haters think and you shouldn’t either. Enjoy this nostalgic party and sing along to ‘Born This Way’, ‘Judas’, ‘The Edge of Glory’, and all the other Aries anthems.

Taurus 

20^th April – 20^th May

Full of absolute bangers like ‘Boyz’, ‘Jimmy’, ‘Paper Planes’, and ‘Come Around’, Kala (2007) is arguably one of the best albums of the noughties. Tenacious, hard-headed, yet down-to-earth, M.I.A. embodies many of the admirable traits of Taurus. Full of memorable bars, eclectic yet danceable beats, and M.I.A.’s plucky energy oozing through her gritty vocals, Kala will enthuse Taurus will energy to tackle the day.

Gemini

21^st May – 21^st June

Lively Geminis start your night out right with a playful house album with energy that matches your love of fun and sass. For those not in the know Deee-lite were a popular New York trio in the early to mid-90s best known for their hit song ‘Groove is in the Heart’. The supremely cool Miss Lady Miss Kier fronted Deee-lite influencing generations to come with her outlandish outfits, soulful sound, and activism. This larger-than-life group fused their colourful psychedelic 60s style with acid house, dance pop, and a hint of hip hop to create a kitschy camp hedonic potion of sound perfect for partying to. Their finest work is Dewdrops in the Garden (1994) features repetitive thumping beats, super cutesy vocals, and fabulous piano – it’s sure to pack the dance floor at any house party.

Cancer 

22^nd June to 22^nd July

Cancers are drawn to soft, creative music often with a romantic quality. A fellow Cancer herself, Kali Uchis makes emotionally nurturing music for the highly intuitive among us. Cancers treat yourselves to a bit of healing and romantic passion with Kali’s newest record Red Moon in Venus (2023). Reflecting “the divine femininity of the moon and Venus” the warm laidback R&B album features a mix of passionate love songs and Kali’s heartbroken yearnings that will entrance Cancers. Hop into a warm bath and soak up the good vibes like a true water sign.

Leo 

23^rd July – 22^nd August

Though Lana Del Rey is a Cancer, her third studio album Ultraviolence (2014) gives off Leo energy. On the album, Lana is confident playing up the ultimate femme fatale image that she had been typecast in presenting the image of a drama-adoring, ambitious, but loyal to her lover diva – just like a true Leo. Any Leo’s melodramatic tendencies will thrive whilst wallowing to ‘Cruel World’, strutting to ‘Florida Kilos’, and crooning to ‘Shades of Cool’.

Virgo

August 23^rd – 22^nd September

Hardworking, creative, reliable, patient, kind Virgos – you deserve an album as good as your character. Mama’s Gun (2000) by psychedelic neo-soul goddess Erykah Badu is the ideal album for you. Incorporating elements of funk, soul, and jazz styles and dabbling in themes of love, philosophy, and religion, it’s a great album for chilling out with your friends and reflecting on your day of putting good energy out into the world.

Libra 

23^rd September – 23^rd October

British singer-songwriter Joy Crookes, a Libra, always sounds poised and in control even when singing about vulnerable themes such as heartbreak, mental health struggles, and identity. Libras will fall for the neo-soul singer on the rich and luscious Skin (2021). Despite the heavy subject matter, Joy’s honey-toned voice and jazzy melodies will soothe Libra’s soul and help them restore the balance they crave after a long day.

Scorpio

23^rd October – 21^st November

The mysterious and passionate Scorpio crave meaningful complex music to match their intense personalities. Rosalía’s MOTOMAMI (2022) will be right up their alley. The concept album detailing the Spanish singer’s struggles with homesickness and isolation during the past three years blew away critics last year and reached the top ten in seven different countries. This electric mix of art pop, flamenco nuevo, and neoperro will ignite the fire in Scorpio whilst satisfying their urge for deep meaning.

Sagittarius

22^nd November to 21^st December

The masked villain MF Doom was an innovative artist who inspired many of his successors with his impressive ability to weave samples from retro cartoons, snappy beats, humorous lyrics, and gorgeous flows to create masterful hip hop tracks that never missed. Adventurous Sagittarius who love the witty and tongue-in-cheek need to listen to MM FOOD… (2004) – a concept album “about the things you find on a picnic, or at a picnic table”. Undoubtedly those who haven’t listened to MF Doom yet will still be familiar with the TikTok-adored tracks ‘Hoe Cakes’ and ‘Rap Snitch Knishes’.

Capricorn

22^nd December – 19^th January

The overachieving, persistent, and sensitive Capricorn will feel inspired by many of the themes on Little Simz’s Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (2021). On this ambitious album Little Simz tackles the injustices black people face to this day, the government’s corruption, as well as her own insecurities, hopes, and dreams, and praises women and other strong people of colour. It’s a bold album that at times is triumphant with Simz’s lyrics surrounded by uplifting fanfare and in other moments more vulnerable and reflective. Either way, it’s an empowering hip hop album full of smooth melodies that will motivate Cancer in whatever endeavours they’re pursuing.

Aquarius

20^th January – 18^th February

Miley Cyrus has always been original and one step ahead of the trends throughout her career – she wowed us as Hannah Montana, reinvented herself with ‘Wrecking Ball’, gave us all the rocker glam with ‘Midnight Sky’, and her new album Endless Summer Vacation (2023) will be the ideal summer soundtrack for Aquarius. Clever, self-reliant, and creative, Aquarius embody many of the traits Miley stands for. You’ll be obsessed with Miley’s spunky new tracks like ‘Handstand’, ‘River’, and ‘Rose Colored Lenses’.

Pisces

19^th February – 20^th March

Synthpop duo Magdalena Bay shook up the music world in 2021 with their futuristic debut album Mercurial World (2021). Its surreal cyber sound sucks the listener into a pink-tinted electronic world – the whole album sounds like if an MS Paint drawing of a unicorn could sing. Mercurial World will appeal to whimsical Pisces with their love for daydreaming. Hypnotic and melodic, lose yourself to the airy ‘Dawning of the Season’ and dance yourself stupid to ‘Hysterical Us’.

Sprinkled among the guests were celebrities such as Pharrell, Hailey and Justin Bieber, Charli XCX, Naomi Campbell, Winnie Harlow, Jourdan Dunn, FKA Twigs, Alexa Chung, Lewis Hamilton, and Marcus Rashord, who all gathered to witness the immense occasion.

London’s Olympia venue was transformed into a blue-lit dystopian madness with mini-exhibitions highlighting their collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Adidas, Palm Angels, and Rick Owens. Jay-Z’s entertainment company Roc Nation also got its own platform allowing guests to record sounds that were then mixed live to create an “emotion-centred experience – because Genius lives within us all”.

Two and a half hours after the event commenced the legendary singer Alicia Keys took the stage performing hits ‘Girl On Fire’ and ‘Empire is a State of Mind’. She was joined by the nation’s favourite rapper Little Simz and R&B singer and Simz’s collaborator Cleo Sol to perform ‘Woman’. Keys wore her upcoming collaboration with Moncler performing in a stunning metallic silver trench coat with matching flares. The singer called the collection, which will be released in late March, “cool, easy, 100 percent New York – inspired by late ’90s streetwear, but with a twist”.

As always Rick Owens made a statement. After presenting his famous black maxi gowns and bulky coats in a dark smoke-filled room, he threw an outdoor afterparty complete with dancefloors and DJs.

Last September, Moncler celebrated its 70th anniversary in an equally over-the-top style when 18,000 people gathered at the Duomo di Milano in Milan to witness the performance delivered by 1952 models, musicians, and dancers (an ode to when the brand was established) dressed wearing limited-edition white Moncler Maya jackets. Oh-so fabulous.

Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo, better known as Little Simz, is angry and she refuses to bottle it up anymore. Instead, she’s channelled it into her brilliant fifth studio album NO THANK YOU masterfully lifting influences from R&B, gospel, soul, funk, reggae and blues to create a thoughtful album packed with interesting sounds. The album was released last year on the 12^th December after being announced only the week prior. Despite its late release some critics have dubbed it the album of 2022 – and we can see why.

The leading lady in hip hop has been at the top of her game for some time now. Her 3^rd album GREY Area released in 2019 was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and won Best Album at the Ivor Novello Awards and at the NME awards. Only two years ago she released her fourth studio album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert winning her the Mercury Prize in 2022 alongside huge praise from fans and critics alike. Despite her climbing success Simz felt pain and frustration after she had to pull her North American tour last year. As an independent artist the financial cost of the tour would have left her high and dry. 

NO THANK YOU, released on the independent label Forever Living Originals, how artists, especially artists of colour, often do not receive the salary or respect they deserve. Little Simz speaks out against this in a powerful way combing soulful instrumentals with bitingly clever lyrics to create a politically charged masterpiece that is as impactful as it is a joy to listen to. ‘Never cared about being immortalised’ is the opening line on the album and sets the tone for the whole album – Simz isn’t after fame or money she wants to make change through her music and bring joy to her listeners. 

On the opener ‘Angel’ Simz discusses stardom and how labels ‘don’t care if your mental is on the brink of somethin’ dark/As long as you’re cuttin’ somebody’s payslip’. The expert sampling of vocals to create an angelic sound is just what we’d expect from Simz’s long-time collaborator and childhood friend Inflo. Cleo Sol, who frequently sings back up and the chorus over the album, adds a soothing juxtaposition to Little Simz’s cool flow. The second track ‘Gorilla’ begins with an orchestral flare and incorporates glorious old school hip-hop beats with a sample from Jurassic 5 along with an ethereal gospel chorus. Simz oozes triumph and powerful as she delivers the line ‘rap’s last hope and the faith, I’m restorin’’. ‘Silhouette’ maintains the gospel vibes with soft choral oohs contrasting Simz anxious flows about persevering despite doubting herself – in the end she remains positive telling those who try to wrong her ‘your insecurity won’t break me down’. 

Simz’s anger is evident on the double entendre titled track ‘No Merci’ where she raps ‘You know that I’m unapologetically black’ to the gracefully mixed electronic beats that will make you want to move. The living West African drumbeats on the start of ‘X’ creates a startling contrast between the relaxed outro of the previous track. On ‘X’ Little Simz highlights the generational trauma of black people that will never leave despite a part of the community being able to achieve success. ‘Heart on Fire’ also continues the theme of artists being exploited with the punching refrain ‘My life is a blessing/ But it comes with the stresses’. ‘Broken’ is one of the most honest songs on the album with the falsetto chorus repeating ‘when you feel you’re broken and cannot fix it’ creating a trance-like drive whilst Simz raps about the struggles of trying to fix a broken system. The gentle instrumental towards the end of the song promises a future of hope and peace.

In the last three songs on the album have a lighter tone than the previous. The short but sweet ‘Sideways’ cleverly samples sped up vocals to create an enticing beat with a vintage sound. ‘Who Even Cares’ is almost psychedelic like the track has been mixed underwater. It displays Simz softer side with Cleo’s gorgeous chorus meshing with Simz’s laidback verse. The autotune on Simz’s vocals gives a relaxed feeling to the number – this will be the perfect summertime track for laying around in the park or on the beach on a hot day. The final track ‘Control’ is a stripped back piano number featuring only Simz’s rapping and a male gospel singer that tells a love story. It’s a charming ending to an album that gives its listener a lot to think on. 

Though Simz flits between moods of feeling comfortable in her artistry and anger caused by the struggles of being a black artist in a ruthless industry by the end of NO THANK YOU she emerges victorious having produced a superb hip-hop album that will push forward the music industry to change and influence other artists to speak out against injustice. We know that we’ll have these songs on repeat throughout the year.

One of our favourite performances of the night was courtesy of Little Simz, as she sang two tracks (Introvert and Woman) from her critically acclaimed album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’. The performance had everything from choreography, slick outfit changes and an appearance from The Crown’s Emma Corrin. Simz then went on to pick up an award for ‘Best New Artist’, in which she took her mother up for the acceptance speech, delivering one of the most heartfelt and emotional speeches of the night. 

Another rapper who stole the show was Dave, who performed with pinnacle members of the British Rap scene; Fredo, Ghetts, Meekz, Giggs. He executed his track ‘In The Fire’ with a fiery stage setup, including an electric guitar that doubled as a flamethrower. 

Earlier on in the night, Dave was awarded ‘Rap Artist’, making this his second Brit award. 

Of course, we have to mention Adele, who performed a soulful rendition of her track ‘I Drink Wine’. The 02 lit up with a sea of torch lights, with everyone enjoying seeing one of the most iconic singers of our time perform impeccably. Adele was nominated for four awards and left with three, adopting the new nickname ‘Queen Of The Brits’.

This year’s rising star, Holly Humberstone brought a delicate flavour to the night with her debut Brits performance of ‘London Is Lonely’. Her sweet vocals have us excited for what is to come in her career. 

Making the North proud, Sam Fender received the award for ‘Rock/Alternative Artist’. He then delivered a note-perfect performance of his hit ‘Seventeen Going Under’.

International awards went to Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and SilkSonic, whilst women in music were heavily awarded in the remaining British categories, with Dua Lipa, Becky Hill and Wolf Alice being recipients. 

Although the Brits is a ceremony to acknowledge the best musical talents in our country and across the globe, there is always such an incredible array of fashion looks for us to enjoy, here is our rundown of the best looks from the night!

Patience by Wesley Joseph feat. Jorja Smith

In anticipation of his upcoming debut project ULTRAMARINE the London-based artist, producer and director, Wesley Joseph, has just released his single “Patience” featuring Jorja Smith. For years, the two artists have known each other being both friends and collaborators under UK’s Horse Collective.

The artist and filmmaker also released an accompanying music video that did not disappoint and showcased the talent first exhibited in his previous productions, “Thrilla” and “Ultramarine”.

The minimal yet appealing video takes us on a car journey around the country, where the two artists can be seen vibing but also encountering challenges and tragedy along the way – questioning “how to be patient”.

Lumberjack by Tyler the creator

A song with a lot of anticipation. Tyler started by broadcasting the “Call Me If You Get Lost” message on billboards around Los Angeles, and then went on to release his “SIDE STREET” trailer to tease us about his upcoming album. But finally, the time has come, Flower Boy has just released his new single “LUMBERJACK.”

Tyler continues to amaze us, developing his peculiar style and artistic vision through a catchy, witty, and in true Tyler-style,out-of-the-common song. As we were impatiently expecting, alongside the track came a music video that got everyone talking. The video, directed by Wolf Haley (Tyler, in case you didn’t know) reminisces on the 70s colours, with various cultural references, the inclusion of futuristic elements, and juxtaposition of ideas and places.

And this seems to be only the begging, as Tyler announced the release of his new album Call Me If You Get Lost coming on June 25th.

No More Friends by Olivia O’Brien feat. Oli Sykes

A clash of genres or simply the improvement of one?

We’re talking about the collaboration between Olivia O’Brien and Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes, on the new song “No More Friends.”

This duo surprised us, the singer-songwriter Olivia O’Brien has just released her six-track Episodes: Season 1 EP, and we must say that this is one of our favourite productions of the project.

Between the blurring of genres, Olivia’s catchy voice, the energetic rhythm, relatable lyrics and 70’s inspired visuals we can’t stop talking about it, an immediate addition to the playlist of the week.

MY OWN by H.E.R.

H.E.R. official debut LP “Back of My Mind” has just been released. The project includes some of her previously released productions like “Damage,” “Come Through” feat. Chris Brown, “Hold On,” and “Slide” feat. YG, amongst others.

But before its release, the artist decided H.E.R has decided to share one final teaser. “My Own” is the latest song released by the singer and songwriter, where she discusses the need to be by herself, about knowing one’s limits and being able to stay on their own.

So if you love H.E.R’s voice or simply resonate with her lyrics, have a listen to “My Own” below.

Rollin Stone by Little Simz

The London rapper continues to take us on her journey of genre experimentation with her latest single “Rolling Stone”. Different from the previous ones if you ask us, but still characterised by up-beat music, powerful lyrics, and a confidence that is noticeable through every sound.

The song is magnetic, and that’s what we hope will remain consistent throughout all of her work and upcoming album “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert”, dropping on the 3rd of September.
