In a Christmas gift come early, the 2024 Fashion Awards (TFA), presented by Pandora, will be fulfilling our Christmas wishes on Monday the 2nd of December at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall. The British Fashion Council (BFC) has also announced that British broadcaster and entrepreneur Maya Jama and musical artist Kojey Radical will return as beloved co-hosts for the awards, guiding us through an evening that celebrates the role of fashion at the crux of culture and entertainment, spotlighting creative talent and telling the stories of the past year in fashion.

TFA have always excelled in bringing together a global community in London, the home of fashion creativity. Working to amplify leaders of change, celebrate excellence in creativity as well as support the next generation of creative talent, this event is also the primary fundraiser of the BFC Foundation which works endlessly to promote the future of British fashion through focusing on education, grant-giving and business mentoring. Through a focus on diversity, equality, inclusion, and belonging, the BFC enables responsible growth through a dynamic and unified community that advocates for creativity, innovation, and collectively supports the industry to grow and talent to gain access. TFA is the primary fundraiser for the BFC Foundation, once again highlighting its importance not only culturally, but for the good of the creative youth.

So, in case you’ve been living under a rock, let’s meet this year’s TFA presenters! The gorgeous Maya Jama, host of mainstream television and radio shows including everyone’s favourite guilty pleasure, Love Island, has become a household name and style icon. Not only stealing our hearts on-screen, but she has also established herself as an avid supporter of British fashion and emerging creatives, even dabbling in design herself and launching a successful clothing collection with Pretty Little Thing in June 2018, followed by a second collection in February 2019 and in December 2020 launching her own face and eye masks range, MIJ Masks, with the first release selling out within 24 hours. In May 2024, Maya joined the BFC Foundation Advisory Committee, showcasing her continued commitment to supporting and championing British fashion.

Kojey Radical, British musician, creative director and mixed-media visual artist is one of the leading voices of a generation of artists and provocative storytellers. Specialising in blurring the boundaries between music genres including grime, hip hop, alternative rap and spoken word, this multi- award nominee, Kojey is an authentic and uncompromising creative force who continues to innovate both in his music and his style. The knowledge of arts and intertwining genres is especially prevalent in the fashion world, and we’re confident Kojey will once again be an expert voice and presenter this year.

Along with their 30th Anniversary coming up, Agent Provocateur have kicked off the festive season with a brand-new playful Christmas campaign starring couple Abby Clancy, model and podcaster, and her ex-footballer husband, Peter Crouch.

The festive short film was released on Wednesday 13th November, shot at The Marquis Cornwallis pub in London, and inspired by the brand’s 2015 “Love Me Tender” film.

Shot by Greg Williams in collaboration with Creative Director Sarah Shotton, the short film featured showstopping lingerie from AP’s Forever Collection, and draws on the brand’s London-cool DNA, trademark wit, and of course the must-have sensual lingerie.

Founded in 1994, Agent Provocateur’s campaign also stars long-time friends and collaborators, including an appearance from stage and screen star Jamie Winstone. Their focus is on empowering women and subverting the male gaze towards that by pushing boundaries as they continue to break ground with every collection.

]]> The “mob wife”aesthetic as coined by users on TikTok is the antithesis to the minimalist, “clean girl” aesthetic that has reigned supreme through the 2020s. The “clean girl” followed the trend of silent luxury, minimal makeup, sleek hair and dressed to match a quintessentially “old money”, bourgeoisie style. However, like in most cases, when there is one trend for too long, we yearn for something different. 

The “mob wife” and in general, the ethos of the mafioso is based in rags to riches. It is the story of the American dream albeit steeped in the grit of the criminal underworld. It is this grit which makes it so much more attainable. This is not to say the “mob wife” is not fashionable. She is very fashionable but, for the longest time she has also been looked at as iconography for the term, “nouveau riche”. She is defined by the gaudy, over the top, almost tacky sense of style.

The “mob wife” is a femme fatale extension of the mob boss. While her authority is derived from being romantically related to the boss, either as his wife or mistress, she is usually portrayed as an individual who is just as commanding. In some variations of the “mob wife” we see her taking over the role of the mob boss when he is incapacitated. Early iterations of her in popular culture, see her be relegated to “arm candy” but, what we do see later on is her dipping into her powerful sexuality, wit and charm to manipulate dynamics in her favour while playing “subservient”. The “mob wife” also plays into the trope of the dark feminine. She is power itself in six-inch heels.

She is above all, chic. She is the complete opposite of understated. She keeps her wealth where she can see it, in her wardrobe. To become her, is to adopt her attitude and that attitude reflects so closely through her style. We are going to look at iconic movie and television “mob wives” to try and break down this aesthetic.

The Sopranos

One of the most titular mob stories to ever hit our television screens is that of the Sopranos. While we all followed along Tony Soprano as he carried out his business across New Jersey, we all fell in love with his two love interests and their distinct styles.

Edie Falco’s portrayal of Carmela Soprano is what we see be replicated across our social media screens when we look at the established “mob wife” who is at the top of the hierarchy, the boss’ wife. She has been styled as a quintessential, Italian-American New Jersey mom complete with manicured French tips, period appropriate juicy couture velour as lounge wear while she maintains the house, a fluffy, teased-out bob and ornate stacks of jewellery. One cannot forget amidst the sea of gold chains and diamond tennis bracelets to add the diamond encrusted cross in honour of her “piety”.  There is an air of preppy suburbia she tries to imitate.

The second kind of mob wife that we see is the mistress, like Adriana La Cerva. She is young, feisty, more sexual, and more importantly holds a fickle position in the hierarchy. Therefore, to secure her position she uses her sexuality. Her style is sexier than the yuppie look trying to be emulated by the wife. She has deeper necklines, crop tops, leather pants, animal print galore, faux fur coats (preferably gifted by the boss) and even more stacks of gold jewellery. The hair gets bigger, the make-up gets bolder. The whole look is aimed at drawing eyes towards her, to stay relevant and out of reach from the rest of the world. She wants to be the top man’s wife but, is not quite there yet. The French manicure is traded in for bold red gel extensions. The hair is longer, the jewellery is far more “in your face” with thick gold hoops, gold bangles paired with contrasting bracelets.

Martin Scorsese’s Casino (1995) introduces to us the character of Ginger McKenna played by Sharon Stone. While we have seen this character be iconic in her own right, she saw a revival in the zeitgeist with Euphoria’s Maddy Perez idolizing her and her relationship with low-ranking gangster “Ace”, as the epitome of wealth. This toxicity would of course mirror in Maddy’s own relationship but, what is more important is Maddy herself is a working-class heroine known for her incredible style and confidence. To mirror the characters is important in understanding why the aesthetic is gaining traction today.

Ginger McKenna is a hustler. She was her own boss much before she gets involved with Di Nero’s character and this independence is shown in the way she dresses. She is someone who uses her looks to distract men as she grifts them this means she has shorter hemlines, cut-outs, lower necklines and flashy accessories. Her make-up is overtly sexy choosing to use smokey eyes and frosted lips to attract “victims”. Her clothes, more often than not, include some form of pattern, there is colour. She is THE visual component when she is on screen, daring people to objectify her. Her hair takes on a more 60’s bouffant look. It is interesting that most of these women are emulating what was considered classy a decade prior, perhaps copying what they saw to be classy whilst growing up but not being able to afford it at the time.

The final epitome of “mob wife” is Michelle Pfeiffer’s 1983 role as Elvira Hancock in Scarface. She embodies the idea of the “prized possession”/ “arm candy” idea that is associated with the boss’ girl. Elvira has been established as the young, beautiful, classy woman that has stayed at the top for a while. She is a (white) status symbol that establishes the crime boss as legitimate—his wealth and class as legitimate. She is in stark contrast to other “mob wives”. Her aesthetic aligns with yuppie culture but mixed with the vice of the Miami vice scene. She wears jewel tones, big sunnies to never show her emotions to outsiders and is far more volatile on the inside than in her outward appearance. Elvira prefers structured suits, flowing silhouettes and an understated yet, glamourous aura. Elvira is an enigma and her sensuality comes from being the mysterious, unattainable wealthy woman.

]]> What archetypes come to your head when you hear Britain? Top of mind, we think of fish and chips, ‘mates’, rain, a good pint, and the Beckhams. Everybody’s favourite British family (no, we didn’t overlook the Royal Family) has risen to a level of fame that rivals the Kardashians in pop culture merit and Gordon Ramsay in Britishness. How could they not?

England’s most loved (or hated, depending on the time) football player and Spice Girls’ very own Posh Spice became the it-couple of the 90s and 00s, with anything as small as an innocent kiss in a BMW making the front page of newspapers everywhere. And with Netflix’s documentary ‘Beckham’ holding the #1 series spot in the UK days after its release, there’s been a collective melancholic reminisce of the couples’ cultural significance. Inevitably then, we’re immediately thinking of Victoria and David’s headline-generating coordinating outfits.

Since they started dating in 1997 until now, the Beckhams have always been bold and unafraid in their style choices– truly as British as it gets. Whether it was a black-and-white moment, denim on denim, or their iconic purple wedding attire, they were (and are) role models for couple dressing. In all-black looks showing off the engagement ring David chose for Victoria, this was the beginning of their matching outfits journey. Many doubted the relationship would last, but they’re living proof that couples who dress together, stay together.

During the 1998 World Cup, the Beckhams stepped out in their signature black palette. Only this time, David was wearing a patterned sarong on top of his obsidian trousers. Although now we think of it as one of his most iconic moments, at the time it caused controversy and outrage everywhere. It was even on the cover page of The Sun with the headline “Beckham has got his Posh frock on”. The Jean Paul Gaultier piece was a gift from Victoria, which just proves they were both ahead of their time.

Although they were still in the early stages of their romance at this point, is there anything as powerful as matching Gucci leather jumpsuits to prove how serious your bond is? They wore their Matrix-inspired co-ords (the film had just been released) to the Versace Club party, which Victoria still has mixed feelings about. During a 2022 interview in “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen”, she said: “I mean it haunts me. It does haunt me, but I love it. We really thought about it and there was a naïveté to it that was just so sweet.”

The famous Beckham wedding at Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin had paparazzi and fans barricading the outside gates, impatient for a glimpse of the couple before OK! magazine’s coverage of the event dropped later (the celebrity news outlet paid one million for exclusive access). In one of their most iconic style moments to date, they chose Antonio Berardi purple outfits to cut the cake. Even a 4-month-old Brooklyn had a purple suit of his own. In the Netflix documentary, Victoria commented “it was fun, we weren’t worried about what people were going to say. You just want to express yourself, that’s just who we were,” she said. David laughs about it now: “I’m trying to think back to when I decided to wear a purple suit, and I don’t know when that happened… But what were we thinking?”

Reigning in the new decade in their London home, David matched Victoria’s corseted jumpsuit and animal print boots with a glossy long brown jacket of his own (very Matrix-Inspired still).

For their MTV Movie Awards in LA, the couple went for all-white ensembles with matching crystal adornments. David wore a sparkly cross necklace and Victoria opted for shiny embellishments on her dress, a subtle detail that reveals the careful thought and attention they put into their outfits. We’re not surprised they headed to Diddy’s iconic white party afterward, but it is shocking that they managed to look so put together while raising two kids.

It was summer in Japan, halfway through the year, when the Beckhams’ style became as sophisticated and polished as the nickname Posh Spice suggests. With matching blazers dressed down with jeans, this was the start of Becks’ more tailored suits and Victoria’s current preference for corsets, formal stilettos, and cigarette pants.

Britain’s pop culture royalty chose navy glamorous attire for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Victoria wore a structured dress from her eponymous brand and a netted pillbox hat, whilst the ex-football player chose a formal suit to match his wife. For a casual movie night with Victoria’s sister Louise, the couple arrived separately– but in the same Canadian tuxedos. In an Instagram story, the fashion designer wrote “I thought those days were over,”, playfully adding “I got dressed first fyi!!!”. Although Britney and Justin did it first in 2001, this serendipitous accident shows how in sync the couple are– even after 24 years of marriage.
