Amy Anzel, the creator of the Hollywood Browzer, gives tells Voir how to and why to Dermaplan.

I’ll admit it; post weekly leg shave, I’ll gingerly do I quick swipe of the monobrow and tash with my Gillette Venus. I know what you’re thinking, but let me stop you right there. With my annoyingly sensitive skin making waxing a no-go, my intolerance to pain meaning tweezering is completely out of the question and after one too many disasters with hair removal cream has left me with post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by even walking past it in boots- I am literally left with no other option.

Yes, I am well aware that it is the wrong tool for the job, and yes, every time I rest the blades on my skin, my mother’s voice saying “don’t do it, it’ll grow back thicker and darker” rings in my head.

However, ever since the unforgivingly bright lights of the tube made a guy I’d been dating feel like he had to point out my moustache, it’s a gamble I’m willing to make- anything is better than not sorting out the areas of my face that grow a little more hair than I’d like to embrace.

While I’m no stranger to taking my Gillet Venus to those problem areas, shaving my entire face sounds drastic and slightly psychotic. But after speaking to Dermaplaning expert Amy Anzel who is the CEO and founder of the Hollywood Browzer, it all makes sense.

In fact, it makes a lot more sense than my current weekly run-ins with my razor. The benefits of Dermaplaning are seemingly endless not only does it banish unwanted monobrows and moustaches, but it also removes that irritating veil of hair we get that prevents a completely smooth makeup application. Amy explains, after dermaplaning or removing the top layer of dead, dull skin and peach fuzz, skin instantly appears smoother, brighter and more radiant. By removing the hair and dead skin cells on the face, you are creating a smooth canvas so that makeup can sit flawlessly on the skin.

It works on a deeper level as well, as skincare penetrates better and is, therefore, more effective as it is no longer being blocked by a barrier of hair, dead skin cells and built-up debris. The hair on the face can trap dirt and bacteria. Thus, removing it reduces breakouts. As people age, their cell turnover slows down. By dermaplaning, the cell turnover increases, which leads to the diminishment of fine lines and healthier-looking skin. By removing the dead skin cells, the Browzer evens out the skin by removing dry patches.

And to top it all off, the smooth skin you are left with means light will now be able to bounce off the skin rather than be absorbed by the hair on the skin resulting in a natural glow.

Amy advises to dermaplane once a week on clean, dry skin, and to use a toner or an astringent to remove the excess oils and debris before. Then, use the Browzer in short, light feathery strokes in a downward motion and use a tissue or microfibre puff to remove the build-up on the Browzer throughout your treatment. After, use a moisturiser. Amy assures that you will begin to notice your skincare products penetrate better and more effectively afterwards as there is no longer a barrier of hair, dead skin cells and built-up debris.
