The 2021 Emmy nominations were announced yesterday, with some of last year’s greatest television programmes picking up numerous nominations.

Amongst the nominations were the on-screen styles of some of the most artfully designed shows of the year. Netflix owned the Outstanding Period Costumes category, with every single nomination coming from one of the streaming network’s shows.

And every single nomination was well deserved — from the peacock bright colours of the romantic period fantasy Bridgerton to the recreation of the world of one of the most extraordinary fashion designers of all time in Halston.

Thankfully, these gorgeous looks are not just limited to the screen — similar styles have been seen everywhere from Saint Laurent and Khaite to Netflix’s own incoming collaboration with the House of Halston.

Here is our selection of 2021 looks, inspired by the nominees:

Bridgerton 

Between the ultra-high waists and the highlighter colours, the romantic regency style of Bridgerton has a drama all of its own.

Fast-forwarding to 2021, empire waists have been spotted everywhere — from the breakout hit blouses of Khaite to the ethereal gowns of Giambattista Valli.

Modern empire cuts can of course be experimental too — for instance, crop tops and cardigans are currently flowing high above the waistlines of Bella Hadid and Kylie Jenner. The high cut style can also be worn with modern fabric updates such as lavender coloured leathers.

Halston

To create the looks for a bio series around one of the most remarkable designers of all time is no small feat — and the team behind Halston (headed by designer Jeriana San Juan) truly lived up to the task.

The flowing lines favoured by Halston are experiencing a renaissance today, with many red carpets featuring styles reminiscent of his designs. Netflix has taken note, and are soon launching a collaboration collection with the modern Halston label, which will be made available next month.

The Crown

The widely accoladed royal drama returned earlier this year, with the timeline taking us into the 1980s — and bringing the early looks of one of the most famous style stars of all time, Princess Diana.

The early looks of Diana are perfectly in tune with what is fiercely popular today — from styles similar the oversize collars she wore as a teenaged nursery teacher’s assistant seen at Alessandra Rich and Rejina Pyo, to massive puff sleeves reminiscent of Diana’s bridal wear being modernised at McQueen.

Here are our favourite early Diana-esque styles:

Ratched

Starring Sarah Paulson, Cynthia Nixon, and Sharon Stone, this prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest offered a new perspective to the infamous nurse, as her early career in late 1940s California.

The design of the show was done with intense colours and hyper-stylised lines that beautifully captured the dynamic look of post-WWII California. The designers contrasted potent greens and blues across the screen with stark whites and muted pastels to create a feast for the eyes.

Similar strong colours and cuts have also become popular in the modern fashion world, from Halpren’s bright blue satin suits to netted hats by Gigi Burris. Here are some of our favourite Ratched-inspired picks:

The Queen’s Gambit

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in this acclaimed drama, set in the staid chess world of the 1950s and 1960s. As the story progresses, Beth’s evolution into an international chess star is artfully displayed through her clothing — with stand out mod miniskirts and sheath dresses successfully overtaking her wardrobe in the same ways she overtakes the game itself. Check and plaids were cleverly added by costume designer Gabriele Binder, as a part of a “chessboard” imagery theme.

In 2021, similar styles are popular once again, from white mod mini coats at Saint Laurent, to micro skirt suits at Gucci and Miu Miu.
