]]> Over the last 10 years there’s been a huge increase in demand when it comes to androgynous design, challenging traditional gender norms and stereotypes that have previously encaged people within fashion. People no longer want to be put in a box, and with an increased demand for more inclusive and diverse clothing options, more and more designers are tailoring their work to this niche, and designing interesting and unique clothing pieces that can be worn by individuals of any gender.

This movement towards genderless fashion is an incredible time for the fashion industry and allows for endless self-expression. There are some specific designers that are absolutely knocking it out the park and creating androgynous artworks, and we are desperate to share them with you. 

Willy Chavarria

One of the first designers that comes to mind when we think about gender fluidity in fashion is the incredibly talented Willy Chavarria. Chavarria is currently senior vice president of design at Calvin Klein and chief creative officer at his own brand. He’s become known for intertwining current issues in politics as well as race and sexuality into his design.

He has created some boundary-breaking androgynous designs and has had a major part in blurring the lines between traditional gender norms His collections challenge societal expectations, celebrate diversity, and encapsulate Chavarria’s unique aesthetic, combining streetwear influences with his bold and inclusive vision.

Eckhaus Latta

Eckhaus Latta is another cutting-edge fashion label that’s spearheading the genderless design movement. Founded by designers Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta. The brand has become known for their avant-garde and gender-fluid design. The brand challenges conventional notions of beauty and style and their collections often feature unconventional materials and unique silhouettes, pushing the boundaries of contemporary fashion with a focus on inclusivity and individuality.

Fashion is a key means of self-expression for many people around the world. With lockdown now easing in the UK, many of us are gearing up to jump out of our loungewear and into something a bit more runway ready.

An ever-growing part of fashion is the need for gender-inclusive clothing that promotes fluidity. It’s not news that people are rejecting the binary framework of gender identity and visual representation, but it’s safe to say that we’ve never seen so many brands opting for genderless collections.

We’ve put together a list of brands who promote the message that anyone can wear whatever they like, regardless of traditional gendered structures. From fun colours and silhouettes to hand-drawn illustrations and natural practices, the genderless trend is proving its place in a more diverse future – one which places us at the heart of it.

Eckhaus Latta

American fashion label, Eckhaus Latta, was founded in 2011 by Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta. Eckhaus Latta have carved out a place for themselves in the industry as a brand that consistently questions established structures and norms, creating gender-neutral designs and casting non-models for its shows. Using unconventional fabrics such as plastic, fishing line, and quilting as well as deadstock materials, Eckhaus Latta is one to watch for fun, vibrant clothing items.

One DNA

Based on the desire to create an urban brand that prioritises inclusivity, One DNA is the brainchild of Simon Black and Travis Weaver. Breaking down the boundaries between womenswear and menswear without sacrificing style, One DNA comprises gender-neutral garments that avoid the typical boxy and oversized aesthetic in favour of tailored and fitted clothing. A black, queer-owned, and eco-conscious brand, One DNA is quickly becoming the leader of the new unisex trend.

Nicopanda

New York based street style brand, Nicopanda, is best known for its playful approach to genderless clothing. Led by Nicola Formichetti, the brand seeks to capture the imagination of street enthusiasts around the world through edgy designs and collections – as well as some amazing collaborations. Some well-known collaborators from recent years include Ariana Grande, Refinery29, Champion, Amazon Prime, Pepsi, MAC, and Hello Kitty. With the motto “DESIGNED FOR ALL AND AVAILABLE TO ALL”, Nicopanda is an exciting take on gender-neutral fashion.

DB Berdan

DB Berdan is an urban lux brand launched by Turkish designers Deniz Berdan and Beg Berdan, with a base in London. DB Berdan’s collections focus on creating genderless apparel that defies heteronormativity, appealing to those who prefer not to be defined by sex, race, or gender. While the brand has a current focus on athleticwear, they are also infamous for their street wear – as seen in the SS20 collaboration with Smiley. DB Berdan also has backing from several major celebrities, including Halsey, Agnez Mo, Little Mix, Jessica Anne Woodley, RAY BLK, Rudimental, Kojey Radical, Stefflon Don, Princess Nokia, and GIRLI.

Daniel w. Fletcher

British-born designer Daniel Fletcher skyrocketed in popularity last year after participating in Netflix’s Next in Fashion, where he placed second. Fletcher has since gone on to launch multiple collections through London Fashion Week, take on his first season as Artistic Director of Fiorucci, and debut his first ‘womenswear’ collection. While given the title of a contemporary menswear brand, Fletcher has always remained adamant that his clothing is for all who want to wear it. In a conversation with Vogue, Fletcher commented with reference to his AW21 Collection: “My beliefs are still the same — a shirt is a shirt and a pair of trousers is a pair of trousers — to be worn by anyone.”

OlderBrother

Characterised as a ‘one-of-a-kind ethical fashion shop’, Olderbrother is a contemporary gender-neutral fashion brand that champions slow fashion and ethical practice. The brand is known for paying close attention to the materials they use, opting for natural dyes that reflect their preference for natural colour palettes. Olderbrother was founded by Bobby Boonaparte and Max Kingery, who are passionate about educating their clientele on the harmful impacts of the wider fashion industry. With the aim of creating garments that anyone can wear, Olderbrother is truly unique in their preference of brand ideals over current trends.

Official Rebrand

Founded by nonbinary artist MI Leggett, Official Rebrand is an anti-waste clothing brand that champions fluidity of expression. Leggett hand paints and alters discarded clothing, creating upcycled pieces that are one of a kind and customisable. As noted by the CFDA, Official Rebrand’s “transformative process celebrates the fluidity of identity, dissociating garments from gendered categories, reintroducing them without arbitrary social constraints.” With their most recent collection, ‘collapse/convulse’, Leggett reemphasised the importance of fashion as a means of self-expression, in particular for marginalised groups in contemporary society.

Last month, the Pantone Colour Institute continued its tradition of selecting its Colour of the Year, combing through cultural influences to discern a single colour that captures the zeitgeist of the year. Taking the crown from last year’s Living Coral is calming, confident Classic Blue as the colour of the year for 2020. As we cross the threshold into a new year and new decade faced with social and political uncertainty, Classic Blue offers a sense of ease and stability. For the Spring/Summer 2020 season, myriad runway shows paid homage to the bold hue, the abundance of the boundless blue shade on the catwalks symbolising the industry’s reinforced desire for stability, creativity and possibility. Timeless, trans-seasonal and gender-neutral, slip into a sartorial manifestation of calmness, confidence and connection, taking inspiration from the runways and streets where shades of sapphire abounded.

In New York, Demna Gvasalia of Balenciaga sent the royal shade down the 2020 runway in the form of gigantic velvet ballgowns and oversized puffer jackets, enforcing a political message of unity against a backdrop of wall-to-wall azure. At The Row, the warm cobalt shade made for an unexpected addition the collection of minimal neutrals and earthy tones, while Eckhaus Latta’s foray into the tranquil hue took shape in a mermaid-sequined maxi-dress. In London, Simone Richa weaved blue floral embroidery into whimsical renaissance-worthy lace dresses, and Richard Quinn injected romantic blue florals into a black fishtail gown. Gucci unveiled a plunging, navel-baring maxi-dress at the brand’s headquarters in Milan, while the calming hue was infused into the collection at Marni in the form of leather dresses and asymmetrical knitwear.

For something a little more wearable, fleets of blue ensembles populated the streets from New York to Paris, from puff-sleeved oversized tier dresses paired effortlessly with classic white trainers to head-to-toe blue boilersuits. If all-over blue isn’t quite your thing, a vibrant blue oversized handbag makes the perfect – and practical – accoutrement for an energetic dose of colour. The fresh combination of white and blue makes for a harmonious pairing – add a royal blue trench to an icy white two-piece, or top off an all-blue ensemble with crisp white accessories. Or, take a shot at tonal dressing and pair your favourite light-wash jeans with an ocean blue teddy coat for a layer of winter warmth. However, you choose to wear it, make a statement by adding Classic Blue to your 2020 wardrobe colour palette.
