Whilst you might be used to reading (and forgetting!) about Chlorophyll in your year 10 science class – ‘Chlorophyll’s job is to absorb light during photosynthesis’ – it has recently gained fame as the key to healthy, glowing and clear skin. All over TikTok’s For You Page are girls who portion their flawless beauty to drinking water with 15 drops of Chlorophyll in. As with many plant-based vitamins, the verdict on whether Chlorophyll actually helps is unsettled (given there is no scientific evidence either way), however its potential benefits are plenty!

Here’s some of the reasons why you might want to consider taking Chlorophyll:

Helping to heal your skin:

Full of anti-oxidants, Chlorophyll is highly anti-flammatory and so might help to reduce the redness which accompanies many forms of acne and skin irritation. In addition to acne, chlorophyll can help control bacteria in skin wounds,///. However, although this sounds promising, there is actually no proven signs that chlorophyll makes acne disappear. Whilst girls have been gushing about their glowing skin and reduced inflammation, there is an no scientific link between the two, and the variables are too vast.

Weight Loss:

Another associated benefit of liquid Chlorophyll is support with weight loss, since a study found that drinking it alongside dieting could increase the speed of your success. Alongside this, there are suggestions that Chlorophyll could help reduce dangerous cholesterol levels, although this is currently unproven.

Detoxification:

According to a conducted study, there has been some reason to believe that chlorophyll might limit aflatoxin, a compound which has been linked to cancer. The potential here is evidently very promising and provides another example of how Chlorophyll can benefit our health.

Healthy blood:

There are some links between liquid Chlorophyll and red blood cells: some people claiming that the quality of these cells is improved, having a positive impact on blood related problems. However, again, the link between drinking Chlorophyll and red blood cells is yet to be fully established and so if your main incentive is to help with your blood, it would be perhaps advisable to seek a better alternative.

A natural deodorant:

Another potential benefit of taking Chlorophyll (and one covered a lot by people on social media) is the reduction of unwanted body odours. Used in the 1940s as a scent neutraliser, people have reported that since taking Chlorophyll they have noticed a change in the amount and intensity of their excretions and so this is another potential, and reported, benefit to bear in mind.

In its entirety, the benefits of Chlorophyll appear amazing, and if you’re in the mood for experimentation then it is definitely worth trying them for yourself! If, however, you like a bit more scientific evidence before hopping onto hyped health trends, eating lots of chlorophyll rich foods (such as green beans, broccoli, parsley) can have just as much impact – and save you some money too! All in all, if you’re open for trying something new then give Chlorophyll a go; if not, don’t worry, there’s no complete evidence that you’re totally missing out just yet.
