Gigi Hadid’s Bridal Look for SS19

One of the most iconic moments of Jeremy Scott’s career at Moschino has to be the SS19 show. The show began with a phone call from the one and only Gigi Hadid who warned Scott that he was late for the SS19 runway, Jeremy then declared that all he had for this collection were some sketches, a designer’s worst nightmare. Despite the implied chaos, Gigi Hadid closed the show in an impeccable bridal look with a train of butterflies following her down the catwalk. This was a moment that stopped everybody in their tracks, it was all anyone was talking about, and looking back on it now, we remember why.

He Predicted Midsommar for SS18

Jeremy Scott’s SS18 collection for Moschino was ahead of its time. You might be wondering how this collection was predicting the future, but if you look at the last few looks from the show some of the looks may remind you of a certain dress worn by Florence Pugh in 2019’s Midsommar. The moment that Dani is crowned the May Queen and is veiled in a gown of flowers has been recognised within pop-culture as one of the most iconic fashion moments in film (and that it was). Celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Halsey even entered into a bidding war over the gown. And while the Moschino looks were not the same as Pugh’s elaborate gown, the they definitely shared Midsommar’s floral influences. Spekaing of Moschino and the film industry, this collection was also home to Zendaya’s iconic butterfly dress that she wore to the premiere for The Greatest Showman.

Moschino or McDonalds for Fall 2014

For their Fall 2014 collection, Moschino shocked us all. Never in a million years would we have guessed that McDonalds would work its way onto the runway, but Jeremy Scott made that happen. Inspired by Franco Moschino’s own satirical outlook on the high-fashion industry Scott incorporated ‘junk’ into this collection, this time through junk food. The red and yellow combination was universally recognisable and the infamous ‘golden arches’ were bent into a heart-shape as a subtle nod to ‘Love Moschino’.

Puppetry for SS21

SS21 saw many shows go digital due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a development within the industry that required a lot of creativity. No-one seemed to jump at this opportunity as much as Jeremy Scott though, who recruited none other than Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to create 30-inch puppets to model his collection. Yes, you read that correctly, 30-inches. This meant that for every look there was a miniature, puppet-sized version ready to be modelled. This moment brought excitement and whimsy in a time of uncertainty and fear as Jeremy Scott did what he does best, made fashion playful again. There was even a puppet version of Scott himself who came out to close the show.

‘Let them eat cake’ for Fall 2020

Inspired by Marie Antoinette, Moschino’s Fall 2020 collection was dramatic, extravagant and over-the-top, but what else would you expect from the 1800s? The Queen of France was the perfect muse for Jeremy Scott who always favours the elaborate in his work, but it also came as an exciting change from Moschino’s former investment in bringing ‘trash’ to the runway, as this time they favoured decadence. The collection was not all bustles and petticoats though, with looks inspired by Marie Antoinette’s most famous quote ‘Let them eat cake’ closing the show.

 As we previously mentioned, Moschino likes to be ahead of the latest blockbusters, and while Barbie has been consistently famous since 1959, Jeremy Scott was re-imagining Barbie’s look long before Greta Gerwig. In 2014, Moschino based their entire Spring Summer 2015 collection off the character designing a fun campaign that brought dress-up into the world of adults.

Enough pink? Never. The Barbie Doll X Jean Louis Sabaji Collaboration

It goes without saying that pink has dominated the fashion world, being a plethora of designers’ colour of choice this year. As Aerosmith’s lead singer Stephen Tyler once crooned, “Pink, it’s not even a question”- and it certainly was not at Arab Fashion Week in Dubai where everyone’s favourite childhood doll, Barbie unveiled a pink-tastic collaboration with Lebanese designer Jean-Louis Sabaji during his runway.

In the days leading up to the event, nobody could stop talking about the much-anticipated collection that he created in collaboration with Barbie. He is, after all, the first Middle Eastern designer to collaborate with Mattel.

Jean Louis Sabaji, who is now also the first ever Arab designer to collaborate with the iconic doll, presented a spring/summer 2023 capsule collection that was motivated by the colour pink as well as self-expression.

“My first-ever fashion experience was with a Barbie doll, and as a child, I used to dress them. I still have the dresses I made for them. There were around five, — I can’t believe that on the 10-year anniversary of my brand, I’m doing a collaboration with them. It’s like going back to my childhood dream,” Sabaji told Arab News.

Presenting his Barbie-inspired designs on a lineup of size-inclusive models in celebration of the “beauty and strength of women.”Ameni Esseibi, the first curvy model from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, opened the show in a sequinned bright pink top with Barbie branding and a tiered skirt made of black feathers.

More feathers followed in an abundance of pink, just one example: a pink top in the shape of an enormous heart that explodes with ostrich feathers. The silhouettes were, as a whole, light and playful, from large flowing plumes functioning as conceptual sleeves to softer twirls that wisped down the garments. Throughout the show, cutouts in the shape of hearts were used frequently. They ran down each side of tailored trousers and served as pocket detailing on a pink floor-length dress with power shoulders. Sporty barbie was definitely in the air influencing some of the garments displayed. How else does one explain the sheer varsity jacket or the stretchy bodysuit paired with a ballgown skirt complete with stretchy gloves?

Feathers and sequins were the featured styles throughout the impulsive pink and black collection, as were hearts, providing mischievous touches as bodices, crafted into hanging necklines and plunging backs, and as cut-out particularisation and patches. There was additionally an outsized carved heart dress and a fluffy heart-shaped top, paired with Barbie pink trousers with cut-out detailing down the side.

Of course, no barbie collection is complete without floor-sweeping evening gowns and form-fitting numbers with the famous sultry thigh-high splits. The collection also saw dazzling cocktail dresses and a beautiful pink strapless dress with an oversized bow.

“It’s the Real Deal, and So Am I”: Lil’ Kim Models for Mackage

The trendsetting rapper is the new face of the Canadian luxury outerwear brand. Mackage’s goal has always been to produce outerwear that strikes a balance between fashion and function. Golesic was appointed last summer ahead of the company’s plans to expand its retail presence outside the US to the likes of Paris, London, Milan, and Tokyo, as part of its growth strategy.

Even though Lil’ Kim is well-known all over the world, the Brooklyn native still dresses like a New Yorker as she describes her approach to fall fashion to the magazine Vanity Fair “I wear a lot of blacks all year long, so not many changes. Just more layers and textures. Up the glam factor.”

The luxury brand is displaying a brand new debut monogram line consisting of timeless pieces, and you guessed it, the collection compromises monogrammed garments in blacks and neutral tones.

In the campaign shot by Drew Vickers and styled by Malina Joseph Gilchrist, the trendsetting rapper captures that effortlessly chic wear essence, modelling in a figure-skimming bodysuit.

“It feels right, you know. This brand is growing so quickly now, but it had to come up year by year building its credibility because people genuinely loved the crazy quality, style, and dramatic fit,” she explains. “It’s the real deal, and so am I.”

Kim’s era-defining and no-holds-barred sense of style is the result of a combination of self-assurance and creative expression

Eran Elfassy, the company’s founder and chief creative director first launched Mackage in 1999. He chose Kim to be the brand’s new face because of everything she has stood for ever since her 1996 album, Hard Core, made hip-hop history as the album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200, the highest debut for a female rap album at that time.

“There was a synergy culturally and from a nostalgic perspective,” Elfassy said in a press release. “Kim has always created iconic powerful looks, and there is power in the way she represents herself.”

A fashion-forward emcee, who has been credited with popularizing all sorts of trends from pasties, to neon furs, and the ever so popular all-over logo garments. Being a fearless force in fashion, it’s no surprise the rapper is a muse for Mackage’s designer.

“Early days I worked with Giorgio Armani, Donatella Versace, and Marc Jacobs, and I still look to these icons as influences. With Mackage now, I just really relate to their mix of streetwear and fashion sensibilities,” Kim says.

Pacsun launches collection with The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Fine art is at the centre of Pacsun’s innovative upcoming capsule collection in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

In the ‘The Study of Fine Arts: Highlights from The Met Reimagined by Pacsun’ capsule, Pacsun combines fine art with fashion. The capsule includes 30 staple pieces for the autumn season from sweaters and t-shirts to hats and socks.

The capsule is inspired by late 19th-century paintings in the Met collection, where florals and lush landscapes are paired with muted tones seen in Tiepolo and Latour, as well as more vibrant floral paintings in shades of green by Van Gogh. The collection depicts the beauty of simplicity and intricate details within a juxtaposition of fine art and modernized clothing.

Using unique knit and woven fabrications, each piece of artwork is directly applied to the designs.

In a statement made by Pacsun’s director, Brieane Olson said: 

“The arts continue to be important to our consumers and community, and partnering with such an iconic museum that has resonance in the fashion world, felt like a natural collaboration for us. We were grateful that several of The Met’s most notable and important works were made available to us for this collection.

— It’s undeniable that the past has a weighted influence on fashion, and Pacsun, together with global licensing agency Beanstalk, wanted to highlight the rich history of The Met through a merchandise and apparel collection that would celebrate that history. The collection consists of styles fit for anyone to wear, allowing consumers to outfit themselves in the art that shaped, and is still shaping our culture.”

This creative collaboration brings to life Pacsun’s unique artistic vision. As a result of this inspiring collection, consumers will be able to experience art in a new manner, combining it with self-expression and their own unique style.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are everywhere these days. Over the past few weeks, our Instagram feeds have literally been flooded with photos from the set of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film.

Developed since 2019, this highly anticipated film project aims to retrace the fictional life of the most famous doll. With a high-profile cast, notably Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken), this film with unprecedented popularity is one of the most anticipated cinema releases of 2023. In production since the beginning of June, the film is currently being shot in Los Angeles, California.

A unique opportunity for all fans to discover in real-time the first images of the biopic. And several scenes have already become a must-see: Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in kitsch cowboy outfits or rollerblading on the Venice Beach boardwalk, in a total fluorescent look straight out of the 80’s… One thing has however caught the public’s attention, and the verdict is clear: the resemblance between the actors and their characters is striking.

The cast: 

The Australian actress Margot Robbie has officially been chosen to embody the famous Mattel doll, who turns 60 this year, in a live-action film. And who better to play along side her than Ryan Gosling, as her partner? The latter actually landed the role of Ken last October. But it was only recently that the rest of the cast was confirmed: Emma MacKey, revelation of the successful series Sex Education broadcast on Netflix, should also hold a place of choice in the film. Will Ferrell also joins the cast as the head of a toy company (The Hollywood Reporter is already guessing Mattel, the originator of Barbie dolls, behind the company). Other stars include America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, Superstore), Issa Rae (Insecure), Alexandra Shipp (Tick, Tick… Boom!, X-Men: Apocalypse), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings), Hari Nef (And Just Like That…, You), Connor Swindells (Sex Education), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) and Michael Cera (Juno, Gloria Bell).

The plot will revolve around a Barbie who is ostracized and sent out into the real world because she is considered imperfect, as The Hollywood Reporter points out. The film will follow her as a human, forced to integrate into this new reality and all that it implies (she will have to take on the body of a real woman and no longer that of a doll). Interviewed by British Vogue in 2021, Margot Robbie acknowledged that the film “comes with a very heavy legacy”, but the actress invites the audience to understand it as a totally different rewrite of the first stories made about her. And given that it is being made under Greta Gerwig’s feminist vision, the surprise promises to be all the greater. What are we hoping for? A film that is as refreshing as it is relevant to current times.

The film will be released on July 21, 2023.

On Monday, luxury Italian accessories brand, Coccinelle launched its special collaboration with Barbie. The flag-bearer is a pouch ‘manifesto bag’ that comes in shades of black and baby pink that reads ‘The Future is Limitless’. Chief Operating Officer, Emanuele Mazziota spoke of manifesting ‘customer-centric strategies, rationalizing the brand’s product, and strengthening its merchandising team’. Coccinelle launched its bag manifesto inspired by inclusion and diversity to celebrate a dimension that is free of stereotypes. The brand message on the website reads, ‘The future is limitless. We believe in barriers being erased, diversity valued, and that all stereotypes should be dismissed. In this new landscape, differences are celebrated, self-acceptance encouraged and the natural beauty that surrounds imperfection is revealed. Accepting ourselves in diversity will make us stronger, the owner of our future’. Coccinelle was founded in 1978 in Sala Baganza, near Parma, Italy, and has promoted diversity in the past, however, the message through this campaign aims to be louder than before.

“Our mission is clear: make noise, because inclusiveness, self-acceptance, and girl power are not just hollow words, sounding nice meaning nothing. The more the message is repeated, the more it gets around, the better,” stated Coccinelle in a press statement. The campaign has underlined international ambassadors and female leaders from 25 countries, to raise voices for the global message of inclusion and poverty through personal stories. The brand’s Instagram post features Annalisa Arcando, Nina Rima, and Daniela Scattolin as ‘some of the campaign’s ambassadors who are assembling together for inclusiveness and self-acceptance.

It is not often we witness the works of female directors grace the cinema screens of Hollywood, so it is a marvel that actress, screenwriter and director Greta Gerwig has announced the release of not one, but two upcoming films, Little Women and Barbie fresh off her success from the critically acclaimed, coming-of-age indie Lady Bird (2017). Her imminent prolific career and fervent fanbase are attributed however, to more humble beginnings as an actress on the outskirts of fame, starring in a number of low-budget mumblecore films.

Mumblecore is the name given to the subgenre of indie films characterised by naturalistic acting and dialogue and a preoccupation with the intimate relationships of people in their 20s. Emerging from the early 2000s, it has resonated with young audiences across the world with its treatment of disillusionment, social awkwardness and miscommunication between strangers— themes all too familiar to the information-saturated minds of Generation Y. As a key figure of this stylistic movement, Gerwig has appeared in a number of films from Joe Swanberg, some of which she co-wrote and co-directed, including Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007) and Nights and Weekends (2008). But it was not until the release of Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha (2012), that she started to gain mainstream recognition for her charmingly clumsy and relatable portrayal of protagonist Frances Haliday.

With witty and highly quotable lines such as ‘I’m so embarrassed, I’m not a real person yet’, and ‘I like things that look like mistakes’, Gerwig charms as the 27- year old aspiring ballet dancer, traversing through friendships, romances and career struggles. As she states in an interview, ‘Some of the independent movies that make money have a very specific thing that you can tell audiences they’ll feel about it…Frances Ha will touch your deep feelings of failure and unworthiness.’ Taking the feel-good promise of commercial indies at the time and turning it on its head, Gerwig seeks instead to touch people’s hearts through the acceptance of uncertainty in the world, and as a result, carves out an intensely realistic reflection of youthful aimlessness.

Her iconic screenwriting collaboration with Baumbach on the film (who later becomes her lifelong partner) has also allowed her to move away from the spotlight in front of the camera to the manipulation of it from behind. With the advantage of experience from both sides of acting and writing, Gerwig became ready to take the world by storm with her directorial debut, Lady Bird, a coming-of-age film set in Sacramento, California about a high schooler named Christine McPherson (played by Saoirse Ronan) who makes everyone call her by the nickname of Lady Bird. The film immediately shot to fame and critical acclaim, winning Gerwig a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The mesmerising element of the film, however, seems not to be rooted solely in the poignant depiction of human interactions, but also in the treatment of the female subject, with Christine shining as the fiercely original teenage character bursting simultaneously with confidence and anxiety.

Gerwig’s account of Christine’s life is revealed to be semi-autobiographical, as she states in a behind-the-scenes video ‘I tend to start with things from my own life, then pretty quickly they spin out into their own orbit.’ By taking bits of inspiration from her own past growing up in Sacramento, such as the famous scene of Christine jumping out of a moving car, Gerwig infuses the film with a personal interconnectedness and improvisational quality, accentuating the importance of female subjectivity to the storyline. As we watch the conventional coming-of-age tropes play out (a character falling in and out of love, losing her virginity, discovering intellectual passions), we become aware of the film’s realist tone, constantly rejecting the urge to romanticise the often romanticised narrative of the teenage girl. Settings are stripped of any hint of gaudiness or theatricality, with a heightened emphasis on the mundane and the monotonous rounds of school and home. Characters are vulnerable to emotional impulses and desires, reinforcing the yin-and-yang idea of both good and evil existing at the same place and time, with Gerwig herself quoted as saying in an interview with Dazed Magazine, ‘I never think about female characters as being likeable or unlikeable. With all my characters—not just with female characters—but with every single character in this film. There are no villains.’

Even the outfits worn by the girls in the film have been thoroughly researched to make sure they remain faithful to the early 2000s era in which the story is set, as Gerwig reveals that ‘The costume designer April Napier and I spent a lot of time looking at old Seventeen magazines. And, there was a catalogue called Delia’s which was something everyone in the United States bought. You always wanted to look like one of the girls from Delia’s!’ Clothing is selected therefore on grounds of narrative accuracy rather than a desired beautification of the female image.

With planted seeds from the likes of Sofia Coppola and her scrutinisation into the art of female dynamics in The Virgin Suicides (1999) and Marie Antoinette (2006), Gerwig herself has transformed into a fundamental figure for the preservation of femininity in film and for the garnering of interest in the growth and maturation of the leading woman. In her upcoming film Little Women (set to release on 27 December 2019) where four sisters come of age in the aftermath of the Civil War, she once again provides a voice for the modern independent female, telling Margaret Gardiner in an interview that ‘I’ve always felt that whether you’re writing a novel or making a film, what you choose to put 30 feet tall on a screen tells the audience it’s important and for me, making lives of girls and women important and 30 feet tall and shot on celluloid—it’s worth it and you’re saying their lives have mattered.’

It has also been confirmed that Gerwig is to pair up with Baumbach on the script for her upcoming film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as a doll who is expelled from Barbieland for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure into the real world. Filming is set to begin in 2020.
